Coh2Shape: Understanding, modeling and measurement of partially coherent sources

Benefiting from decades of intensive research, the electromagnetic behaviour of coherent sources and devices is well understood. Coherent electromagnetic fields behave in a deterministic way and can thus be predicted accurately.

However, in optics, many sources behave in an essentially random way: random electronic transition, random electron-hole recombination, random quasi-particle annihilation, etc. Moreover, it is known that the statistics of the sources are influenced by the electromagnetic landscape, so that the same source may behave differently when its surrounding is modified.

The goal of this project is to study theoretically and validate experimentally a new framework that can predict the behaviour of such random sources and the partially coherent fields they emit. This framework is at the heart of a newly developed electromagnetic solver.
